Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a surgical process done to get rid of excess skin and fat from the abdomen and to tighten the abdominal muscles.  This procedure can considerably diminish an overhanging abdomen.  Men and women that are in relatively good shape and healthy, but want to get rid of fat deposit or loose skin from around their abdomen, are the best candidates for a tummy tuck.  Sometimes diet and exercise only goes so far and you get stuck with a fat deposit that won’t respond to your best efforts.  Whether the loose skin or fat deposits are from multiple pregnancies or excess skin after loosing weight, a tummy tuck can help get rid of that unsightly mass of flesh.  A tummy tuck can improve your physical appearance and boost your self-esteem ten-fold.

This procedure has become quite common, and thousands are performed every year.  In your first visit, your plastic surgeon will assess your health, the fat deposits around your abdomen, and your skin tone.  Make sure to let your surgeon know if you smoke, are taking any medications, vitamins, or other drugs.  Discuss openly with your surgeon what your expectations are and what are alternatives are available to you.  There is an option called a mini-tummy tuck, partial abdominoplasty, if your fat deposits are limited to the area below your navel.  This procedure is less complex and can be performed as an outpatient procedure.  You may also be able to get your tummy tuck in conjunction with a liposuction; this will remove unwanted fat deposits from the hips.  The procedure can be done with either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with a sedative.  The operation can run anywhere between two and five hours for a complete abdominoplasty and one to two hours for a partial abdominoplasty.

Your surgeon will have vital detailed instructions for you pre and post-op that will help you prepare and recover from your cosmetic surgery.  Make sure you move around soon after your surgery, this will help prevent blood clots.  Also give up smoking one to two weeks before and while you are recovering as this will help you heal faster.  Smoking interferes with the circulation to the skin.  Be very careful with physical activities and make sure you receive approval from your doctor before resuming any exercise routine.  Exposure to the sun and a strict diet can also interfere with the healing process.

Temporary side effects experienced after a Tummy Tuck may include:

  • Pain
  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Soreness
  • Numbness of the abdominal skin
