Lap Band

In the U.S. 65 % of adults are considered obese, that translates to roughly 20 million people.  About a million people are categorized as super-obese, and about 400,000 are categorized as over super obese, that means they weigh in excess of 400 pounds. For many of these people conservative weight loss methods have little effect.  Controlled dieting, exercise, and behavior adjustments are not enough to curb the downward spiral of weight gain when you are looking at hundreds of pounds to be lost.  For these people the alternative is surgery.

The “Lap-Band System” is a safer and more cost effective surgical option when compared to gastric-bypass. Lap-Band also has less serious side effect and less of a chance for major complications.  The procedure is done with minimally invasive techniques and without the need for major surgery.  The band is actually a synthetic ring or belt that is placed around the top part of the stomach.  This technique has the added advantage of being reversible and adjustable.  This has the desired effect of having control over your hunger and it lets you feel full or satisfied while eating less.

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, Lap-Band, surgery is the most popular surgical treatment for obesity in Europe, Australia, and South America where it has been available for over ten years. In the U.S. it is the second most popular of all bariatric surgeries, but it was only approved by the FDA in 2001.  The “Lap-Band System" is simply the name brand for the adjustable gastric band used in the procedure, which is the only one the FDA-approved for this type of surgery.

Some insurance companies are covering the cosmetic surgery now, but you will have to provide documentation that you have tried dieting and/or behavioral changes and prove they have not worked for you.

Recovery time is usually about a week after surgery.  You will have to follow a dietary plan that may include vitamin supplements, a few weeks of a liquid diet, followed by a few weeks of soft foods, and ultimately solid foods.  You may also have to follow an exercise program and behavioral-modification therapy. Results vary but on the average patients will lose 50% - 60% of their excess weight within a two-year period.
